The state must help car industry out of the crisis
In an article for the business paper Jornal de Negócios Helena Garrido compares the current crisis with an earthquake and calls for financial aid for car makers: "After an earthquake people don't start discussing how many millions should be invested to save the survivors and bury the dead. We are currently experiencing an economic and financial earthquake, the consequences of which affect society as a whole. Tax money must be used to save people. ... The question is whether the state, or in other words, we taxpayers, should also ... help other branches. It makes no sense to rush to the aid of each little business with taxpayers' money. But the car industry presents a problem for society. The insolvency of car factories in the US and Europe has the same impact as the financial earthquake. ... These are special cases that require unusual measures. After these measures have been taken the free market should be restored as soon as possible once more."
