Nuclear power in Poland?

The liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza calls for the introduction of nuclear power in Poland. At present 90 percent of the country's energy comes from environmentally damaging coal-fired power stations. On the other hand the country is deeply sceptical about nuclear power because in the 1980s Poland was severely affected by the Chernobyl disaster: "The EU has left us little time to begin revolutionising our energy sector. Will our government use this time wisely? For the time being it won't. A year ago Gazeta Wyborcza began a debate on the subject 'nuclear energy for Poland'. The response was overwhelming. Proponents and opponents raised their voices to be heard. ... We must build it [a nuclear power station] because our coal reserves are almost exhausted. This year for the first time we imported more coal than we exported. We must build such a power station because the climate policy of the EU will make coal even more expensive."
