Nato needs to strengthen its unity

The opening of the Nato summit in Strasbourg and Baden-Baden prompts the daily Le Monde to examine the state of the transatlantic alliance, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary: "US President Barack Obama is touring Europe while the countries of the Old Continent are preoccupied with three geopolitical factors that are now making themselves felt: the incomplete management of the consequences of the Cold War, … the terrorist threat since 9/11 and the [ensuing] Nato operations in Afghanistan, as well as the repercussions of the worst financial crisis since the 1930s. In such an unstable context the transatlantic alliance gains importance. It is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its founding in times of all-pervading doubt. The ruptures between the partners of the alliance that resulted from the Iraq war in 2003 may no longer exist. But now Nato is facing different problems. The alliance must therefore work indefatigably to mobilise its forces and strengthen its unity."
