Lithuania soon without a nuclear power plant

The EU Commission has rejected Lithuania's request to extend the operation of its Ignalina nuclear power plant until after the end of 2009. The daily Lietuvos Rytas criticises the government for not having sought alternatives sooner: "The Lithuanian government must now explain how the problems which will arise with the shutting down of Ignalina may be solved with the help of the EU. Perhaps we will be able to adapt in energy - and political - terms. But if so the government must finally start doing its homework, and take stock of how little Lithuania has accomplished since 2004. No one can say they knew nothing about the plant's having to close down. It seems that as always those in power still have no faith in their own abilities."
