Taking International Women's Day more seriously
During the times of socialism greater importance was attached to International Women's Day, marked every year on March 8. Back then the emphasis was on the role of women as mothers. This day should now be seen as an occasion to reflect on the role of women in today's society, the daily Večer writes: "Among the committees of the European Parliament there is also one on women's rights and gender equality, which in itself is an indication that we still have a long way to go. In Slovenia we must introduce a quota for women in order to ensure that more women are represented in politics, an area where important decisions that affect society are made and where the proportion of women is worryingly low. … There are ample reasons to place more importance on the March 8 celebrations, not only with festivities that primarily stress the role of women as mothers but also with activities that encourage reflection on the role of women in all areas of social life and thus come closer to the true essence of Women's Day."
