Tuition fees improve university education

A survey of university presidents has shown that a clear majority of them favour higher tuition fees. A commentary in The Daily Telegraph welcomes higher fees: "Removing the cap would encourage a genuine market to emerge. The best institutions with the highest standards would be able to charge far more and weaker institutions would be forced to charge less than they do now. Disgruntled students might console themselves with the fact that they would reap the rewards of high-value, high-cost degrees in their professional lives. Any increase in fees will have to be accompanied by creative mechanisms to ensure the participation of poorer students. Students have developed strong consumerist instincts now they are paying their way; many are unhappy about the standard and intensity of their tuition. They will expect - and deserve - better."
