Holocaust in Eastern Europe is central to Europe's history
The weekly Dilema Veche writes on US historian and specialist on Eastern Europe Timothy Snyder: "According to Snyder, Nazism and communism are bound by the fact that they both developed and implemented policies of systematic mass murder. The majority of victims of both systems were Eastern European. Auschwitz is the symbol of the Holocaust throughout the world. But, according to Snyder ... the most Jews died in Eastern European countries (including the Soviet Union), either in prison or in deportation. Whereas in the West one could talk about the Holocaust, the topic was taboo for 50 years in the countries of Eastern Europe. Now we can talk about it. Now documents are coming to light. People's perspectives on the Holocaust are changing, and we are seeing that the symbolic location of Auschwitz was not at the 'centre', but only on the 'periphery' of the tragedy. ... In this way the history of Eastern Europe has become a key chapter in a 'common history' of Europe. ... The West is beholden to accept recent history, also as it is perceived by the East."
