Karjalainen was published for the first time in 1874 under the name Karjalatar. It was closely aligned with the conservative National Coalition Party until 1994, after which it became independent. It sees itself as a champion of the North Karelia region's interests. The newspaper is part of the Väli Suomen Media Oy publishing group, which also owns Savon Sanomat and Keskisuomalainen. These newspapers share editorial content and a foreign affairs newsroom.
