Founded in 1976 by Eugenio Scalfari and Carlo Caracciolo, La Repubblica is closely aligned with the reformist wing of the ruling centre-left coalition. During his time in office, however, it was critical of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. The paper has its own television channel. The print edition focusses on commentaries. In the summer of 2014 an evening edition available only for online subscribers and as an app was launched. In 2017 the Il Gruppo editoriale l'Espresso publishing house merged with the Italiana Editrice (Itedi) group, which published the two newspapers La Stampa and Il Secolo XIX, to create one of Italy's largest publishing groups. It has a 20 percent share of the Italian print media market and is the leader in the digital sector.
