Neatkarīgā

Daily newspaper

Neatkarīgā was established in 1904 under the name Cīņa (Fight) and was the main organ of the Communist Party of Latvia during the Soviet era. In 1990 it was renamed to Neatkarīgā cīņa (Independent Fight), which was later shortened to Neatkarīgā. Since 1999 the paper has belonged to the Latvian oligarch Aivars Lembergs, mayor of Ventspils since 1988, who has been accused of using the paper to pursue his own social and political objectives. Lembergs himself often writes commentaries for Neatkarīgā. The publisher, Mediju nams, was sold in the spring of 2016 to businessman Lauris Kāpostiņš whose sister is Aivars Lemberg's daughter-in-law. The longtime editor-in-chief Anita Daukšte left her post at the end of February 2020. Since May 2020, Neatkarīga is only available online.
