Two journalists and a man with a good head for business founded the daily newspaper Politiken in 1884. In 1905, under chief editor Henrik Cavling, the chronicles were introduced in which authors and scientists could freely express their opinions and trigger broad debates. Politiken's publisher merged with the company that published the liberal-conservative Jyllands Posten newspaper in 2003 to form JP/Politikens Hus. Although the two papers now have the same publisher each pursues its own editorial policy. Politiken awards several prizes, including a highly-endowed freedom prize and literature prize.
