Founded in 1703, the Wiener Zeitung is the oldest newspaper in the world that is still published and is still owned by the Republic of Austria to this day. As such, it acts as the government's official organ. Since 2004 it has raised its journalistic profile by providing comprehensive coverage of all areas. It aspires to be a liberal quality newspaper. How much political influence is exerted on the paper depends on the political party affiliation of the Secretary of State for Arts and Media.
