The Times view on attacks in Russia: Drones over Moscow

Kyiv has denied responsibility, but must heed the West’s conditions

After 15 months of war, with increasingly barbaric attacks by Russia on hospitals, schools, power stations and homes, Ukraine has begun to hit back. Missiles and drones have struck deep behind the Russian front line. And Belgorod, a large town in southern Russia, has come under ground attack by a mysterious armed force, made up of supposedly anti-Putin Russians, which stormed across the border from Ukrainian territory. This counter-offensive has now escalated dramatically with Moscow reporting an attack by eight drones on the capital itself. This aerial assault, which can be seen as direct retaliation for heavy Russian drone and missile attacks on Kyiv in recent days, has no doubt bolstered Ukrainian morale.
