Ukraine needs cash, arms and hope. All are in short supply. Kyiv’s western backers have stumbled into money problems as the year comes to a close and the political will to support the country against President Putin’s aggression appears to be melting away. The West should be clear: if the Ukrainians are defeated and forced into a humiliating peace with Mr Putin because their war effort is deemed too expensive, the world order will not recover. The Nato alliance, which for almost two years has shown itself to be a stalwart and responsible champion of the Ukrainian cause, will be ­exposed as a geopolitical husk.
