Aktuality.sk became tragically famous in 2018 after the double murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak, who worked for the news website, and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová. The murders sparked Slovakia's largest pro-democracy and press freedom protests to date. The era of then prime minister Robert Fico came to an end after the next elections. Fico is accused of involvement with mafia structures. Aktuality.sk continues its work in the spirit of Kuciak's committed investigative journalism and has become Slovakia's most trustworthy and popular newssite, visited by more than a million users daily. However, its advertising revenues have declined to such an extent that a paywall has been introduced for some of its content.
