Telex was founded in 2020 by former employees of the news website Index who resigned when Index's editor-in-chief Szabolcs Dull was fired. Telex went online in October 2020 with Szabolcs Dull as its new editor-in-chief. The online newspaper is published by a public limited company owned by the editorial board and the staff. Telex has become one of Hungary's leading news portals. According to the website, the outlet is financed by advertising revenue and reader donations. The editorial team says that the Czech publishing company Economia donated 200,000 euros when it was launched.
