This radio station with high verbal content plays an important role in Russia's political life, as it is seen as a platform for all positions. In 2001 the station passed into the ownership of the pro-Kremlin Gazprom-Media Holding. Nevertheless, under the leadership of editor-in-chief Alexey Venediktov Echo of Moscow has maintained its critical course since 1998. Roughly a third of the Russian population can tune in to the broadcaster.
