Der Freitag was established in 1990 as an East-West weekly newspaper in an amalgamation of the Ostberliner Sonntag (1946) and the Volkszeitung. Jakob Augstein bought the paper in 2008 and as its publisher and, since 2013, editor-in-chief reshaped it into a leftwing opinion paper, boosting the online edition through active reader participation. From January 2017 to January 2018, the journalist Jürgen Todenhöfer, who has been accused by a number of media outlets of having close ties to new right populism, was publisher of Der Freitag.
