Der Tagesspiegel describes itself as the capital's most quoted newspaper, but current subscription numbers show that it is a long way off being the nationwide daily that it aspires to be. It is the most widely subscribed-to paper in Berlin but is still predominantly read in the western districts of the city. Since 2014, editor-in-chief Lorenz Maroldt has been producing the Newsletter Checkpoint daily, which has around 100,000 subscribers (as of December 2019, according to the publisher's data) and was awarded the Grimme Online Award in 2015.
