De Volkskrant was founded in 1919 as a weekly newspaper for the Catholic labour movement. In the 1960s the newspaper developed into an independent daily newspaper for left-wing intellectuals. It is a left-liberal, supraregional quality paper that increasingly targets well-paid and younger readers. The weekend magazine covers a lot of lifestyle topics. De Volkskrant was named European Newspaper of the Year in 2013.
