De Volkskrant

Daily newspaper

De Volkskrant was founded in 1919 as a weekly paper for the Catholic labour movement. In the 1960s it became an independent daily for left-wing intellectuals. It is a centre-left, national, quality paper that is increasingly aimed at high earners and younger readers. The magazine it publishes on weekends deals mainly with lifestyle topics, while its Sir Edmund supplement focuses on science and culture. In 2013 it was nominated European Newspaper of the Year.
