De Volkskrant was founded in 1919 as a weekly newspaper for the Catholic labor movement. In the 1960s the newspaper developed into an independent daily newspaper for left-wing intellectuals. It is a left-wing liberal, supraregional quality paper that increasingly aims to reach well-paid and younger readers. The weekend magazine covers a lot of lifestyle topics. In 2013 the newspaper was named European Paper of the Year.
