El País is Spain's most widely read and internationally recognised paid newspaper. Its first edition was published shortly after the death of military dictator Francisco Franco. This centre-left daily provides comprehensive coverage of European and international issues. It takes a sceptical to hostile view of the left-wing party Podemos and the separatist movement in Catalonia. It wasn't until 2020 that El País introduced a paywall for the print content published online.
