Founded by the leftist author Johan Ehrenberg, this paper was first published in January 2014 and sees itself as an alternative to the supraregional heavyweights Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. Its launch was financed by crowdfunding from readers. At the end of 2017, fifteen local editorial offices had to be shut down. In 2018, the paper had to repay government support of over 800,000 euros because incorrect information was given for the allocation of this support. The editorial offices in Umeå and Jönköping were shut down.
