Bianet website sees itself as an independent news network with an emphasis on human rights, women, LGBT and freedom of expression. Journalist Nadire Mater and left-wing activist Ertuğrul Kürkçü launched Bianet in 2000 as an alternative to the established Turkish media, most of which belong to large companies. It is mainly financed by the European Commission. Some contenct is also available in English and Kurdish.
