Liechtensteiner Vaterland was founded in 1936 as the party paper of the liberal conservative Patriotic Union but has increasingly distanced itself from the Union over the years. The same can be said of its main competitor, the Liechtensteiner Volksblatt, which started out as the mouthpiece of the Catholic-conservative Progressive Citizens' Party.
