The Swiss online paper Journal 21 was founded in 2010 by Heiner Hug, the former chief editor of the news programme Tagesschau. Around 80 journalists write for the website, most of whom have been in the profession for many years and are now retired. It focuses on analyses, background reports and commentaries with the aim of acting as a counterbalance to the mainstream journalism of the daily newspapers, which the editors criticise as too fast-paced and sensational.
