The weekly current affairs magazine Marianne was started by French journalists Jean-François Kahn and Maurice Szafran in 1997. Its stance is provocative and critical of the government. It is 95 percent financed through sales and only 5 percent through advertising. The website marianne.net has its own bloggers. Circulation has plummeted in recent years.
