Standart was founded in 1992 as a quality newspaper. The Russian-Israeli aluminium magnate Michael Cherney bought it in 2000 and his lawyer in Bulgaria, Todor Batkov, became its official publisher. In the ensuing years Standart became a combination of quality and tabloid newspaper. In 2004 it officially passed into Batkov's ownership. It has reportedly been financed by the politician and oligarch Delyan Peevski since 2011.
