Daily newspaper

Star was founded in 1999 by the Uzan group, at that time one of the largest conglomerates in Turkey. In 2004 the newspaper was seized by the government. After changing hands several times it was owned for several years by pharmaceutical entrepreneur Ethem Sancak, who has close ties to the AKP government. He sold the paper in 2017 to businessman Hasan Yeşildağ, who is also said to have close ties to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The paper is considered a government mouthpiece, like TV channel Kanal 24, which also belongs to the Star media group.
