Daily newspaper

Star was founded in 1999 under the aegis of the Uzan group, which was the largest conglomerate in Turkey at the time. In 2004 the paper was seized by the government. After changing hands several times it now belongs to pharmaceuticals entrepreneur Ethem Sancak, who has close ties to the AKP government. It is seen as a government mouthpiece, as is the TV broadcaster Kanal 24 which also belongs to the Star group.
