The Evening Standard's business model was revamped in 2009 after a sharp drop in sales and major financial difficulties. Since then it is has been distributed free of charge in central London, which doubled its circulation. It was hard-hit by the pandemic, however. With a current circulation of just over 300,000 copies, The Evening Standard is now almost back down to the level at which it was converted from a paid to a free paper in 2009.
