Radio Europa Liberă (Radio Free Europe) is a United States government-funded organisation that broadcasts from Prague to several Eastern European countries. Before 1989 it was an essential source of information for many Romanian citizens and their only means of hearing opinions other than those imposed by dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. In 2008 - one year after Romanian joined the EU - the broadcasts to Romania were discontinued. Since the 1990s, however, the organisation has broadcasted to the Republic of Moldova and Transnistria on an hourly basis - in Romanian and Russian. According to the editors the broadcaster does not have a particular political orientation.
