Causeur was launched in 2007 by essayist and journalist Elisabeth Lévy as a pluralist debate platform. The idea was to shake up the country's "monotonous" media landscape, and the platform has occasionally kicked off broad debates with controversial articles which often have a right-wing bias. Selected commentaries and analyses are available on subscription only and published in Causeur magazine, which is published on a monthly basis. Causeur's main shareholder is Gérald Penciolelli, who has also financed publications by the right-wing reactionary movement such as Minute or Confidentiel and was part of the leadership of the neo-fascist Parti des Forces Nouvelles, which split off from the Rassemblement National in the 1970s.
