The website was founded in 1999 by Internet entrepreneur Anton Nosik and within a few years it became Russia's most important independent news website. It was taken over by the Kommersant publishing company in 2008. Since being taken over in 2012 by Rambler, which belongs to billionaire investor Alexander Mammut, the paper has avoided overt criticism of the country's leadership but it is still a respected online media outlet.
