The Gazeta.ru website was founded in 1999 by Internet entrepreneur Anton Nosik and within a few years it became Russia's most important independent news website. It was taken over by the Kommersant publishing company in 2008. Since it was taken over in 2012 by the Rambler holding company, which belongs to billionaire investor Alexander Mammut, the paper tends to avoid overt criticism of the country's leadership but it is still a respected online publication.
