The business paper Vedomosti was founded in 1999 by the Sanoma Independent Media group, the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times as a joint project. Each partner held a third of the shares. The paper quickly became the leading quality paper in the business sector. It resembles Britain's Financial Times in design and style and its content is similar to that of its two sister papers. After a law was passed in 2014 restricting foreign ownership in Russian media assets to 20 percent, the paper was sold together with the Moscow Times to media entrepreneur Damian Kudryavtsev.
