Al-Ahram was founded in Alexandria by two Lebanese brothers as a weekly newspaper. It later became a daily newspaper and moved its offices to Cairo. In 1960, the paper was nationalised by Gamal Abdel Nasser. The paper has been strongly influenced by the state ever since. Al-Ahram is the newspaper with the largest circulation in Egypt.
