The pro-EU daily The New European was founded by British pro-Europeans in July 2016 after the Brexit referendum. Initially it was planned to only publish the paper for a brief period. Its positive reception prompted the publishers to carry on. The focus is increasingly on digital output. The New Europe won a string of awards. In February 2021, the paper was bought by a consortium including founder Matt Kelly and other renowned journalists.
