Strana (The Country) is regarded as one of the leading Ukrainian news sites and was founded in 2016. Articles are published in Russian only. Due to the paper’s outspoken criticism of the government, the editorial offices have been searched and criminal charges filed against editor-in-chief, Ihor Huzhva. Huzhva has been accused of tax evasion and blackmail. He himself applied for political asylum in Austria in January 2018. The future financing of the site is unclear. Opponents describe the site as pro-Russian and Russian funded.
