The news site of private TV channel JOJ became tragically famous after the double murder of its investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée in February 2018. Kuciak had been researching the influence of the Italian mafia on decisions in the highest political circles, with the trail leading all the way to the office of Prime Minister Robert Fico. This research very likely sealed his fate. The murder sparked the biggest mass protests the country had seen since 1989. Premier Fico resigned as a result.
