The online portal gained notoriety in 2018 for the double murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová. This sparked the largest mass protests to date to save democracy and freedom of the press in Slovakia. Premier Fico, associated with mafia-like organisations and the oligarch who allegedly commissioned the murder, had to resign. In the following presidential and later parliamentary elections, liberal-conservative forces won, which ended the strained Fico era. Aktuality.sk continues its work in the spirit of Kuciak. The site is now so highly reputed among the population that it has become the go-to information site in Slovakia during the Corona crisis. More than a million users visit the site daily. However, the crisis has also led to a collapse in advertising revenues. The site therefore asked its readers for help in April 2020 and will probably be forced to introduce a paywall for certain content.
