The history of the sports newspaper Gazeta Sporturilor goes all the way back to 1924. During the Second World War as well as during the Communist Era, it had to temporarily cease its publication. At the end of 1989 this paper returned to the media market. In the past, Gazeta Sporturilor not only uncovered a number of corruption scandals in football, but also scandals in the Romanian healthcare system. According to the editors, the paper has no political orientation. Since the autumn 2018 it has been owned by Ringier Sportal S.R.L. - a company that is half owned by the Swiss Media Group and half by the Bulgarian Sportal Media Group.
