MBK Media belonged to former Russian oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who has been living in exile since 2013 after ten years in prison. The emphatically critical web portal emerged from the website of the civil rights movement Open Russia. The project was discontinued in August 2021 after the site was blocked by the Russian media supervisory authority due to alleged "connections with an undesirable organisation".
