Index is Hungary's largest independent news site. Its investigative reporting has caused a stir on several occasions. Alongside the television station RTL Hungary, it is seen as one of the country's few remaining independent journalistic heavyweights. It is owned by the"Magyar Fejlődésért Alapítvány" foundation, whose sole curator is the media lawyer László Bodolai. The company that established the foundation, NP Nanga Parbat 17 Zrt., as well as the company CEMP Sales House, which has the exclusive right to sell the advertising space of the online portal, went to Gábor Ziegler and József Oltyán in September 2018. Gábor Ziegler has worked for Index companies for many years, József Oltyán is active member of the KDNP party, the sister party of the ruling Fidesz. Oltyán sold his stake in March 2020 to the pro-government media entrepreneur Miklós Vaszily, who is also chairman of the pro-government private television broadcaster TV2. To what extent Index will be able to maintain its independence remains to be seen.
