In July 2016 Novinar was unexpectedly closed down without any reasons being given for the move. According to reports in the media the daily had been in financial difficulties for several years. Novinar was published by the prominent Bulgarian author and politician Lyuben Dilov Jr until 2012, when according to media reports it was acquired by the controversial Bulgarian politician and oligarch Delyan Peewski via a complex conglomeration of companies. Novinar had no clearly discernible political orientation but did have a marked tendency to omit coverage of key current political affairs.
