Vrij Nederland (Free Netherlands) is a left-leaning weekly magazine that was originally founded in 1940 as a Dutch Protestant resistance movement newspaper. After 1945 it was published only on a weekly basis. Since the 1990s it has developed into a critical magazine featuring analyses and commentaries and also many articles on culture. It was saved from bankruptcy in 1950 by the left-wing publisher Arbeiderspers. Due to a drop in sales figures since December 2016 VN appears just once a month and is concentrating on boosting its online presence. To begin with articles are now published on subscribers' smartphone apps.
