Trump wants to be president again

Despite the midterm congressional elections having failed to give him the boost he had hoped for, former US president Donald Trump has announced that he is running again for president in 2024. He made the announcement on Tuesday from his estate in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. What are his chances this time round?

This is good for the Republicans

In Visão, journalist Luís Delgado welcomes the fact that Trump wants to do the whole thing again:

“This is very good, especially for the Republicans: if they want to get rid of him once and for all, they have a big chance to do so in the primaries. Trump's candidacy is also beneficial for Americans in general, who are fed up with politicians bossing them around all the time. ... And that goes for both parties, which are in dire need of ideological, age-related and structural renewal.”

Being in the spotlight is his only chance

Trump is putting all his eggs in the PR basket, Večernji list observes:

“By announcing his candidacy early, Trump is trying to intimidate any potential opponents in the Republican Party, where the realisation is gradually dawning that the party can't win with him because his extremism scares off moderate voters without whose votes victory is impossible. ... Trump is desperate for the spotlight. ... He needs the media to attack Ron DeSantis, his most serious potential rival for the nomination so far. That there are no other rivals means that his tactics are working.”

Battered boxers are the most dangerous

Underestimating Trump would be a fatal mistake, writes the Frankfurter Rundschau:

“Not only has he survived two impeachment trials and the public ostracism after the storming of the Capitol but the new faction in the House of Representatives is more devoted to him than ever. Above all, the ex-president has a war chest brimming with a hundred million dollars and a loyal following that continues to worship him like a cult leader. Trump has the judiciary breathing down his neck and his reputation has been in tatters since the attempted coup in January 2021. He is now a battered boxer. And those are the most dangerous.”
