Can Poland protect itself from Russian drones?
After a military drone crashed in Poland on Wednesday, the country's defence ministry has accused Russia of provocation. As was the case in Lithuania three weeks ago, Poland's press now asks how prepared the country would be for hostile drones in an emergency situation.
A bigger threat than tanks right now
Gazeta Wyborcza calls for more investments in air defence:
“The Russian flying device was neither shot down nor detected. That is no easy undertaking, of course, because it was a single drone made mainly of composite materials that absorb radar waves. The Eastern defence shield currently under construction must be expanded to include systems for detecting such objects. Right now this is more important than fortification measures. We are not under threat from Russian or Belarusian tanks, but from the drones with which the Russians are testing our defences.”
Even Ukraine can't fend off every attack
But Newsweek Polska says that the idea of a complete defence shield is unrealistic:
“In a nutshell, small, cheap, slow and low-flying missiles are among the most difficult targets to detect. And this doesn't just go for Poland. Even the Ukrainians, who are really experienced in fending off attacks like this on a mass scale, are not able to intercept every one of them.”
