Trump: Ukraine could be supplied with Tomahawk missiles

US President Donald Trump has held out the prospect of supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. He said on Monday that he had "sort of made a decision" on the matter but would want to know how Kyiv intended to use the long-range US weapons system. Putin has responded by saying that such a move would jeopardise his country's revived bilateral relations with the US.

Now both sides can fight on equal terms

Neatkarīgā describes why Ukraine needs this weapon system:

“In the current phase of the war missiles have become increasingly important, but Russia has many while Ukraine has few. In order to fight the enemy on halfway equal terms, Ukraine needs more modern missiles. ... The Tomahawks would allow it to launch significant strikes on Russian military infrastructure, such as bases and logistics centres located far behind the front lines and beyond the reach of Ukraine's current weapons. ... But as always, everything depends on US President Donald Trump, who constantly changes his mind, so that you never know what tomorrow, the day after tomorrow or an hour from now will bring.”

Here a dream – there a nightmare

24tv.ua comments:

“Today's world is one where a mere idea can become reality with just one signature from a Nobel Peace Prize nominee. So Ukrainians should not stop dreaming of Tomahawks for their armed forces and should continue knocking on closed doors - because even Javelin anti-tank missile systems once seemed impossible. If we really get these cruise missiles, we need to be ready and understand what they can do and why the Russians are so afraid of them. And this has been the case for generations, because Tomahawks were already feared when Putin was still a low-level official in the Soviet KGB.”

Final warning to Moscow

Radio Kommersant FM refuses to believe that Trump has only "sort of made a decision" about whether to go ahead with supplying Tomahawks:

“The statement by the White House boss that he will wait and see what Kyiv intends to do with the weapons appears disingenuous. How many public and private bilateral meetings have already taken place at various levels, including at the expert level? It's highly likely that the objectives have long been agreed upon and that all justifications for them have already been obtained. So Trump's statements are purely political and mean that Washington is ready for a new level of escalation. Russia is being asked to soften its negotiating position and told that otherwise the phrase 'I've sort of made a decision' will become 'I have decided'.”
