Collision between refugee boat and Greek coastguard

At least 15 people were killed and 25 injured, including two Coast Guard officers, when a speedboat carrying migrants collided with a Hellenic Coast Guard vessel off the Greek island of Chios on Tuesday. As in the case of a similar accident in December, the authorities are claiming that the camera on board the Coast Guard vessel was not in operation.

The consequence of a deadly policy

The state is concealing the true cause of the tragedy, Efimerida ton Syntakton writes:

“With the help of willing accomplices, the government launched a communications campaign to convince the public that the captain of the refugee boat was responsible for the collision. In a repeat of the scenario in Rhodes, when a Coast Guard patrol boat literally tore eight refugees to pieces during a chase in December 2024, the Coast Guard and the government are now making similar claims to divert attention from their responsibility for the deadly policies they have pushed through at the country's maritime borders.”

Close the borders

Capital calls for a restrictive migration policy:

“If we continue to take half measures, we will continue to see more boats. And we will continue to count bodies. ... But there is another way! We just have to rule that borders are not an abstract concept. They are a prerequisite for the existence of the state. And that true humanity lies not in supporting illegal migration routes, but in closing them, so that the selling of hope to the unfortunate people of this world, with one-way tickets and watery graves, finally comes to an end.”
