Estonia: Olympic Committee ousts president

The Estonian Olympic Committee (EOC) voted to remove EOK President Kersti Kaljulaid from office – making her the first president to be ousted in the organisation's 102-year history. Opposition to Kaljulaid, who was Estonia's president from 2016 to 2021, had intensified over her efforts to increase transparency into the EOC's finances.

EOC boss should not play judge

Postimees hopes that a spirit of reconciliation and a bias-free mindset will emerge in the divided sporting world:

“You don't have to agree with everything in this life, but the EOC president should not assume the role of a judge – her task is to ensure that athletes have everything they need to get results, including, and above all, winning medals.”

Background to crisis not fully transparent

Õhtuleht argues that a good leader should know that they need to cooperate with those who voted them into office, otherwise they lose their backing:

“And this is precisely what happened on Monday – the people who gave Kersti Kaljulaid the mandate a year and a half ago, retracted it. There are lots of details that have not be explained in this crisis. Kaljulaid's work as head of Estonian Olympic sport has been likened to cleaning out the Augean stables – but sadly she lacked the strength to see it through. The roots of this scandal and whatever prepared the soil for it are hard to grasp. It's easy enough to tear things down – but now we need to build them up ourselves, and build them better.”
